Tales from an Unmapped Country

Original price was: R99,00.Current price is: R79,00.
“I have an idea,” said Kain. “You must go and visit my old village. Because why? Because you are always travelling and talking to people. When you come back you will be able to tell me the truth, but not to hurt my heart. You will tell me and I will be pleased to hear, but I don’t want to go there again myself, it will make my heart too sore.” Both journeys offer up wonderful insights into places and people, and into the persona and character of the author.

Travellers’ Tales

Published on 2023
Original price was: R109,00.Current price is: R89,00.
“For the greater part of our lives Caryl and I have travelled the roads and walked the veld of the Eastern Cape. Both of our fathers were born here, Caryl’s in Cala in what was the then Transkei, and mine on a farm just west of Port Alfred in what was then the Lower Albany District. “During our travels we have met with shop-keepers and shepherds, labourers and lay-abouts, conservationists and con-men, farmers and financiers and many more. Some make an appearance in the pages of this book.” This is how adventurer, historian and raconteur Bartle Logie introduces this, his 11th Eastern/Western Cape travel book. However, in true Bartle fashion, you can be assured that it is not only people, interesting as they are, who appear in the book, but special places, events, plants and animals. Behind every story is meticulous research, both the desk- bound and real on-the-ground varieties - Bartle Logie hallmarks. The trusty trio - Bartle, Caryl and the Isuzu bakkie - continue to criss-cross this wonderful region to keep us entertained with its history, people and spectacular beauty.

Travels with 20/20 Vision

Published on 2023
Original price was: R109,00.Current price is: R89,00.
Adventurer, historian and raconteur Bartle Logie’s normal research pattern involves intensive deskbound research, accompanied by meticulously following the route of the planned narrative in the trusty Isuzu. However, this was not to be for this his 10th book – those plans hit a major snag in 2020: the Coronavirus Pandemic. As he puts it: “Making plans is all very well, but we were no sooner on our way than we were faced with the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and associated lockdown. This resulted in enforced ‘virtual’ travel while seated at home in a comfortable chair. Ultimately, in dribs and drabs, the journey was completed in reality, but unlike any other that we have undertaken.” However, this has not in any way detracted from this eminently readable story of the history, people, flora and fauna of the Garden Route and the Langkloof – among South Africa’s most beautiful and fascinating regions – told in Bartle Logie’s easy, highly personal fireside style.
